The dad

Ddey, the playground inventor

He sees fun where everyone else sees junk. Playful, protective without hovering — and every now and then, a teeny bit grumpy.

Personality

  • Patient and understanding: he takes kids' ideas and fears completely seriously.
  • Creative and inventive: he turns trash into toys and toys into playgrounds.
  • Protective, not smothering: he encourages independence in safe spaces.
  • Good-humored: he uses humor to defuse conflicts and to teach.

Ddey's workshop

In his free time, Ddey builds robots out of junk, old gears and cast-off parts. Billy and the brothers Nick and Stu love to help — and they learn about physics, recycling and teamwork along the way. Many of these creations become prototype toys for the town's parks and schools.

Nick and Stu are brothers and Billy's great friends. They are not Ddey's kids, but he's their go-to mentor for all things mechanical.

Twelve expressions of Ddey: happy, sad, angry, surprised, confused, scared, thoughtful, laughing out loud, winking, sulking, neutral and suspicious
